Chrome Extension — Ideas

How the Chrome extension works with Canny Ideas — creating Ideas and adding Insights from any website, on behalf of a user or company.

Written by Canny

Overview

The Chrome extension lets you create ideas and add Insights from any website — without opening Canny in a separate tab. You can create ideas or Insights as yourself or on behalf of any user or company.

The Chrome extension is available on Free, Core, Pro, and Business plans.

Setting up the extension

  1. Install the Chrome extension from the Chrome Web Store and log into Canny.

  2. Go to the Chrome extension settings in Canny and toggle Send new ideas to Portal on or off depending on your workflow. When the toggle is on, additional board and category fields appear so Canny knows where to create the portal post.

Creating ideas and Insights

Click the extension from any website to open the Ideas form. The form includes:

  • Title — surfaces suggestions of existing ideas as you type

  • Description

  • Attachments

  • Group — where the idea should live on your Ideas dashboard

  • User and Company — attribute the feedback to yourself or on behalf of any user/company

  • Insight priority

As you type the title, similar existing ideas surface in the panel — click one to add an Insight on that idea instead of creating a new one.

If you have text selected on the page before opening the extension, the Insight details are pre-filled automatically.

The extension supports both light and dark themes.

Things to note

  • Only admins listed on the Admins page in your Canny settings have access to the extension.

  • Ideas created via the extension are internal by default. They are only published to the portal if Send new ideas to Portal is toggled on in the Chrome extension settings, or if you manually publish the idea.
