Canny sends Slack direct messages in two situations involving ideas you're connected to. These DMs are separate from in-app and email notifications — they're delivered only through Slack, and they're controlled at the workspace level.
When you'll get a DM
When you're assigned as an idea owner
As soon as another admin sets you as the owner of an idea, you'll receive a Slack DM letting you know. The DM links back to the idea so you can review the context.
When an idea is marked complete
When an idea moves to a Complete status, Canny sends a DM to the account owner of any company linked to the idea through its insights.
When the linked company has a HubSpot or Salesforce record, the DM includes a link to that record so the account owner can quickly check the customer before reaching out.
How "account owner" is determined
Account owner comes from your CRM data. When you connect HubSpot or Salesforce, you map your CRM's account owner field to Canny during integration setup. Canny syncs that field onto each linked company and uses the synced value to decide who gets the DM.
The DM is sent whenever the company has an account owner in the synced data. The integration does not need to be currently connected — Canny will use the most recently synced value. If the integration is disconnected, the DM still goes out, but the company name in the message won't be linked to a HubSpot or Salesforce record.
If a linked company has no account owner in the synced data, no DM is sent for that company. Other companies on the same idea that do have account owners will still trigger DMs.
Turning DMs on or off
Slack DMs are controlled at the workspace level in your Slack integration settings. There's no per-trigger control — turning Slack DMs off turns off both triggers together.
Things to note
These DMs are Slack-only. There's no in-app or email equivalent for either trigger.
The completion DM goes to account owners, not the idea owner. If you own an idea but aren't an account owner for any of its linked companies, you won't receive the completion DM for it.
The DM uses the most recent CRM-synced account owner value. If you've never connected HubSpot or Salesforce, no companies will have an account owner mapped, and the completion trigger has no one to send to.
