Overview

Groups and sub-groups are key to organizing ideas. This article goes into creating, organizing, assigning, and deleting groups in Canny Ideas.

The basics

Groups work like folders. They organize ideas into broad product areas or themes.

Each group can have sub-groups for more specificity, down to 3 layers:

Actions

Skip to any action:

Creating a group/sub-group

Use the plus button in the left-hand column to create a new parent group:

This will prompt you to set the group name, along with the description and keywords. This information is used to inform auto-grouping powered by Autopilot. If you don’t fill it out, Autopilot only has the group name to work off of. The better your descriptions/keywords are, the more likely your ideas will be grouped correctly:

To create a sub-group, use the three-dot menu seen when you hover over an existing group:

You can nest sub-groups up to three layers deep for more detailed organization:

Filtering by group

Groups can be used to create filtered views. Just click the Filter button at the top of the page. You can save a custom view just above that:

Assigning ideas to groups

There are two ways for an idea to be assigned to a group:

1. Automated assignments via Autopilot

Ideas are assigned to a group automatically by Canny Autopilot when they’re created. This is why accurate descriptions and keywords matter when creating a group.

Note: Autopilot will not attempt to group ideas created by admins. These are assumed to be placed in the correct group.

You can always update the group description and keywords by editing the group. Just use the menu next to the group title:

2. Manually moving an idea to a different group

Ideas can be moved to a different group by using the dropdown on the right-hand side of the open idea drawer:

You can also move ideas in bulk using the checkboxes. Once more than one idea is selected, you’ll see a menu appear at the bottom of the page:

Deleting a group

Any group can be deleted using the menu in the group title on the left-hand menu:

You will be prompted to type the name of the group to confirm the deletion. All ideas within the group will be deleted.

Things to note:

  • Canny does not automatically create new groups.

  • There is no option to disable auto-assignment for groups.

  • Autopilot will not attempt to group ideas created by admins. These are assumed to be placed in the correct group.

  • Deleting a group will delete all associated ideas.
