Updating portal fields from the Ideas dashboard

How to read and update portal post fields — board, tags, categories, Portal ETA, Portal Status — directly from the ideas table, plus the Votes field for scoring.

Overview

When an idea is linked to a portal post, you can read and update the portal post's fields directly from the Ideas dashboard — without switching to the Feedback view. This includes board, tags, categories, Portal ETA, and Portal Status. The Votes count from the linked post is also exposed as a field you can use in scoring.

Canny Ideas is available on Free, Core, Pro, and Business plans. Teams on legacy plans (Starter or Growth) will need to move to new plans to access Ideas.

Available portal fields

The following portal post fields are available as columns on the ideas table and can be edited inline:

  • Board — the portal board the linked post lives on

  • Tags — tags applied to the linked post

  • Category — the post's category

  • Portal ETA — the public-facing ETA shown on the post

  • Portal Status — the post's status as visible to end-users

In addition, a new Votes field shows the live vote count on the linked post. You can use Votes as a factor in your Score fields to weight ideas by portal demand.

How to use it

  1. On the Ideas dashboard, click Fields in the top toolbar.

  2. Add the portal fields you want to see (Board, Tags, Category, Portal ETA, Portal Status, Votes).

  3. Edit values inline directly from the table — changes sync to the linked portal post.

Things to note

  • Portal fields only show values for ideas that are linked to a portal post. Internal-only ideas show empty values.

  • Updating Portal Status from the ideas table changes the public-facing status on your portal but does not send end-user notifications. To notify voters of a status change, update the status from the portal post directly.

  • Use the Votes field in your scoring formulas to factor portal demand into prioritization.
