Canny Ideas FAQ
This FAQ covers common questions about Canny Ideas, including migration, setup, feature functionality, and change management. If you’re transitioning to the new Ideas experience, this guide will help you understand what to expect and how to prepare.
🧭 Migration and Setup
How should I prepare for migrating my existing posts?
Before reaching out to enable access to the beta, we recommend you quickly review your existing feedback boards and feature requests. We recommend ensuring you have clear, concise post descriptions that make it easy to group ideas correctly after migration.
Once the beta is enabled on your account, your existing posts will be replicated as Ideas. By default, all your deas are in "No Group". Please build out your ideal hierarchy by creating groups and sub-groups. We strongly suggest you include a group description because Canny will try to automatically move your existing feedback into the correct groups. The more descriptive you can be, the more accurate the automatic grouping will be.
Things to keep in mind:
Flexibility: You’ll be able to move Ideas between Groups afterward. This setup isn’t permanent
Unlimited Groups: You can create as many groups, parent groups, and child groups as you need (within the 3-level depth)
Internal Only: Groups are for your team’s organization - customers won’t see them, so optimize for internal clarity
Post Statuses: The existing public status will be copied over to the internal Idea status
Author: We will choose an admin account to be the author of migrated Ideas unless you specify who the author should be

⚙️ Feature Functionality
Can I customize scoring in Ideas?
Yes! Similar to what you find currently in the internal roadmap, Canny Ideas supports score fields. Each idea can also have more than one score, in case multiple teams have different scoring criteria.
Can Ideas automatically regroup posts that were assigned to the wrong group by Autopilot?
Automatic regrouping isn’t currently supported. If an idea was added to the wrong group, it will need to be moved manually. We recommend keeping groups clearly defined and adding guidance in the create post form to minimize mistaken grouping.
How should we handle merging similar ideas?
For related ideas, you can:
Create dedicated groups or subgroups to keep triage organized. Learn more
Merge duplicate ideas thoughtfully, especially if the phrasing is similar but the underlying issues differ. Adding clear descriptions can help distinguish between similar reports.
💡 User Interface and Experience
Will there be sorting options like “Trending” or “Top”?
While you can sort by the number of insights (equivalent to sorting by Top, as votes count toward insights), sorting by Trending isn’t currently in Canny Ideas, but is planned for parity with the existing feedback portal. For now, you can also sort and filter by key attributes like score.
Will tags be available in Canny Ideas?
Tags aren’t yet available in the new Canny Ideas view, but support for tags is under consideration to help teams maintain context and organization. For now, Themes are going to be helpful and provide similar functions to what tags offer in Canny posts.
