Overview
Admin notifications on the Ideas dashboard are scoped to events involving you directly: being mentioned, being assigned, being an account owner on a completed idea, or activity on ideas you follow.
Canny Ideas is available on Free, Pro, and Business plans. Teams on legacy plans (Starter or Growth) will need to move to new plans to access Ideas.
When you'll get an idea-related notification
When you're @-mentioned in an idea comment
If a teammate @-mentions you in an idea comment, you'll receive a notification (both in-app and via email). Idea comments are internal — only Canny admins on your team can be mentioned and notified.
When you're assigned as an idea owner
When another admin assigns you as the owner of an idea, you'll receive a Slack DM. This is delivered through Slack only — there's no in-app or email equivalent. See Slack notifications for idea owners and account owners for details. Being assigned also makes you a follower of the idea (see below).
When an idea you own at the account level is completed
When an idea moves to a Complete status, account owners of any company linked to the idea via insights receive a Slack DM. This is also Slack-only. See Slack notifications for idea owners and account owners.
Following ideas
Follow an idea to get notified when it moves forward. Click the bell icon in the idea sheet header to follow or unfollow.
You automatically follow:
Ideas you created
Ideas assigned to you as owner (unless you assigned yourself)
Followers are notified when:
The idea's status changes
A new insight is added to the idea. Insights created from portal votes don't trigger notifications.
Notifications are delivered by email and Slack DM. Manage each channel from Preferences → Notifications (previously called Email preferences), where every notification type has its own toggle. Everything is on by default. The Slack section requires the Slack integration with DMs enabled.
The admin who made the change is never notified of their own action. If you follow an idea and are also a voter or insight user on it, you'll receive one email, not two.
Emailing users when an idea's status changes
When you change an idea's status from the idea sheet, you can write a message and click Send email to notify the users behind the idea. Recipients are the users connected to the idea through insights. If the idea is published to your portal, an Include voters option lets you notify the post's voters as well.
The email follows your whitelabel settings, and admins receive a different variant than external users.
Events that do not trigger notifications
The following do not generate notifications today:
Idea status changes, unless you follow the idea, send an email from the idea sheet (see above), or the completion DM applies
New ideas created — manually or by Autopilot
New insights added to an idea, unless you follow the idea
Idea field updates
Things to note
Changing an idea's status does not notify end-users automatically. You can notify them manually with Send email from the idea sheet, or automatically by configuring a status mapping between the idea status and the linked portal post status with the Notify users? toggle enabled.
The two Slack DM triggers (assignment and completion) are controlled at the workspace level in your Slack integration settings. There's no per-trigger opt-out.
The portal notification settings tab is now called User Notifications, to distinguish it from your personal Preferences → Notifications tab.
