Overview

Link Canny posts with Azure DevOps work items to automatically update the post statuses based on updates made in Azure DevOps.

Benefits

  • Automatically update users as developers make progress on feature requests

  • Link posts and work items between Azure DevOps and Canny for quick reference

  • Set up custom rules to decide which updates trigger notifications

How to set it up

Before you begin

  1. Owner-level admin permissions in Canny are required to connect the integration.

  2. We recommend creating a "Canny" Azure DevOps user to authenticate the integration.

    1. This way, your team will have finer control over the integration's permissions and level of access.

    2. All the updates on Azure DevOps (new work items, new comments, etc.) will be made on behalf of this user.

Connecting Azure DevOps

  1. Ensure your Azure DevOps organization has enabled the Third-party applications via OAuth application connection policy. You can find that at https://dev.azure.com/YOUR-ORGANIZATION-NAME/_settings/organizationPolicy with your org name in Azure DevOps:

  2. Head to the Azure DevOps settings page in your Canny settings.

  3. From here, you will be prompted to enter the organization name. This can be found on your Azure DevOps homepage or in the URL of your Azure DevOps dashboard:

  4. You’ll have to accept Canny to access the Azure DevOps account you have created:

  5. You’ll then be redirected back to Canny to create your rules:

  6. Use the dropdowns to create rules for Canny to update based on actions in Azure DevOps:

That’s it! Canny will now follow the rules set up to update the statuses of posts automatically.

Creating Azure DevOps work items from Canny posts

Every Canny post now features a new "DevOps" section in the post sidebar. To create a new Azure DevOps work item, click "Create new Work Item" and pick a Project and a Work Item type. Give your task a name, fill in its description, and complete any other required custom fields.

You can open the newly created work item in Azure DevOps by clicking on its name in the post sidebar.

Connecting existing Azure DevOps work items to Canny posts

To connect an existing work item to a Canny post, click on the "Link Work Item" button in the "DevOps" section in Canny. Look up existing work items by name, and select one to connect it to the post.

To unlink a work item, hover over the name on the post sidebar and click the "X" icon:

Things to note:

  • Azure DevOps is available only on the Business plan. Just start a chat or email sales@canny.io to get a quote!

  • Existing work items linked to Canny posts are tagged as linked-from-canny in Azure DevOps.
