Managing users and companies

Create users and companies, and link or unlink user-company memberships from the Users & Companies tab.

Overview

Beyond reviewing and cleaning up your tracked users, you can build out your user and company data directly in Canny — creating users and companies by hand, and managing which companies a user belongs to. These actions live on the Users & Companies tab (/admin/users).

For reviewing, filtering, and cleaning up tracked users, see Managing tracked users.

How users and companies get into Canny

Most users and companies are created automatically — when an end user posts, votes, or comments on your portal, or when they're synced from a connected tool:

The manual actions below are for cases those paths don't cover — for example, adding a customer before they've engaged with your portal.

Creating a user or company

From the sidebar on the Users & Companies tab, you can manually create a user and/or a company — useful when you want to capture a customer in Canny before they've posted, voted, or been synced from an integration.

  • Create a user — add a user manually. [confirm exact fields: name, email]

  • Create a company — add a company manually. [confirm exact fields: name, domain, MRR/ARR]

Linking a user to a company

There are multiple ways to link a user to a company. Note that a user can belong to more than one company.

From /admin/users, you can link a user to one or multiple companies.

Link a company to a user inside any idea's impact overview modal. Handy when you're reviewing a user's impact and realize their company association is missing or wrong. Assigning a company there has the same effect as linking from the Users & Companies tab.

When adding insights for users, you can create and link users and companies. Users and companies that aren't linked already will be linked on insight creation.

Unlinking a user from a company

You can unlink a user from a company to remove that membership — except when the membership came from an integration sync. Memberships created by an integration can't be unlinked manually; they're managed by the source integration.

Things to note

  • Integration-synced company memberships can't be unlinked manually.

  • A single user can be a member of multiple companies.

  • All admin roles can manage user-company linking.
