Overview
The Slack integration lets your team capture feedback, create ideas, add Insights on behalf of customers, and more, all without leaving Slack. You can also trigger notifications to select Slack channels and account owners.
The Slack integration is available on all plans.
Setting up the integration
Before you begin:
Owner-level admin permissions in Canny are required to connect the integration.
You'll also need to be an admin in Slack.
Go to the Slack settings page in Canny.
Click Add to Slack under the functionality you want and authorize Slack.
⚠️ If you connected Slack a while ago, reinstall the integration from the Slack settings page to access all new features
@Canny in Slack
Mention @Canny in any channel or thread where the bot has been invited and tell it what you want in plain language. Canny replies in-thread, so the result is visible to the channel. Available on all plans.
You can ask @Canny to:
Capture feedback in a thread for example, "@Canny track this on behalf of acme.com". It captures the thread's context, runs it through Autopilot for deduping, and replies with a link to the new or existing ideas.
Create or add insights without leaving the conversation
Create a company and optionally set its MRR/ARR
Create a user and add their email address
Invite @Canny to a channel the same way you'd add any Slack app, then mention it in the channel or in any thread within it.
Ideas settings
Configure these from the Slack settings page in Canny:
Send new ideas to Portal
When on, the Slack feedback form shows Board and Category selectors and ideas you submit are published to the selected board. Turn it off to keep ideas internal (you can still publish individual ideas manually).Insights priority required
Require a priority to be set when adding an Insight from Slack.Ideas fields required
Choose which custom idea fields must be filled in when creating an idea using /canny
Creating ideas and adding Insights
Besides @Canny, you can use the Submit feedback shortcut or Add to existing feedback shortcut in Slack to create a new idea or add an Insight to an existing one. Submit feedback is available both as a message action (the "more actions" menu on a message) and as a global shortcut (the shortcuts / "+" menu). The /canny slash command also still works if you prefer a form-based flow.
You can create feedback on behalf of a company or user when creating a new idea, adding an Insight to an existing idea, or sending a message to Autopilot.
Autopilot deduplication runs on all Slack submissions, including ideas created directly from a Slack shortcut, so you don't end up with duplicates when the same request comes in twice.
Channel notifications
New: You can set up Slack notifications through Canny's Automations feature for more targeted/filtered rules.
Connect Slack channels to receive notifications for the boards and events you choose (new posts, votes, status changes, and more):
On the Slack settings page, choose which channel receives notifications
Customize the boards and events you want notifications for. Repeat to add more channels.
Slack direct messages
Account-owner DMs
Send account owners a Slack DM when their accounts give feedback, so they stay on top of customer needs.
Send Canny the account owner's email via the SDK or an integration like Salesforce or HubSpot.
Map the account owner fields on the Company fields tab so Canny knows who to notify.
On the Slack settings page, make sure Direct Message Notifications is on.
Idea assignment
Admins can get a Slack direct message they are assigned as the owner of an idea.
Disconnecting Slack
Remove the integration by disconnecting all feedback and direct-message notifications, and by deleting each notification set up on the Slack settings page using the X on the right of each entry.
Things to note
Slack is available on all plans.
When you add a new board, enable it on the Slack settings page to get its notifications.
Multiple notification instances can be set up.
Anyone in your Slack workspace can use @Canny or the
/cannycommand to add feedback; they don't need to be a Canny admin.
Using a legacy version of Canny?
Canny Ideas is now the default experience. If your workspace is still on the legacy Canny experience (before Ideas), feedback submitted from Slack creates posts instead of ideas. Channel notifications and account-owner DMs work the same way.
